Does Crying Actually Have Health Benefits?

How long has it been since you last cried your heart out? All of us shed tears; whether it is because of a relationship that ended or frustration due to work. While some people may consider it to be a sign of emotional weakness, confronting your emotions, in fact, requires great strength. Letting out your emotions in front of others requires a great deal of courage.

However, crying is more than just a positive sign for your emotional well-being, but there are several health benefits of crying as well. From freeing your mind of frustration to helping you keep a clear vision, the advantages of crying galore. Here’s how a good cry every once in a while can help you live a healthy life.

#1. Relieves Stress

Crying can fill you with a feeling of relief, even if it doesn’t make any change in the circumstances that made you cry. Experts also believe it to be more beneficial than punching the wall, which could lead to physical problems like injury, high blood pressure or a headache.

#2. Improves Mood

A study conducted by the University of South Florida in 2008 found crying to be self-soothing and observed that in many cases, it helped in elevating the mood of the subject even better than anti-depressants. While about 9 out of 10 people involved in the study felt better after crying, less than 1 in 10 said they felt worse after.

#3. Releases Toxins

Crying is not only good for your soul, but it is also good for your body. Stress-induced tears help wash away cortisol, the stress hormone. The high level of the hormone in the blood can interfere with one’s memory and learning, and also results in lowered immune function and bone density.

Dehydration of the eye membranes is among the most common causes blurry vision. Made by lacrimal gland, tears lubricate eyelids and eyeballs, which clears up our vision. It also washes away the dust particles and debris from the surface of the eye, helping us see better.

#5. Kills Bacteria

Lysozyme, an organic fluid also found in saliva and human milk has antibacterial properties. A good cry can kill more than 90 percent of the bacteria found in the eye and help keep bacterial infections and other problems arising due to a high level of bacteria at bay.
