Does Day-After or Morning-After Pill work?

One must always use protection while indulging in the act of lovemaking. Otherwise, the repercussions can range from sexually transmitted diseases to getting pregnant. Though despite knowing the dangers, there are often occasions when a couple is unable to use contraception, or they fail to work. In such cases, the only safe bet is a morning after pill.  

Emergency contraceptives are your best friends if you have neglected to use condoms during the deed, the condom broke during the act, you have not religiously followed the birth control method, or there was a situation where you were forced to partake in unprotected sex.

The morning after pill is also known by another name which is Plan B and is taken by the female as a form of emergency contraception. It is generally advisable to take the pill just soon after doing the deed, but it will still be effective if taken within the time period of 5 days. Some morning after pills can just be taken without any prescription whereas there are a few that can only be bought by doctors prescription such as Ella

Another contraceptive pill that is highly recommended just because of its effectiveness is Paragard IUD. This again can be taken up to five days after having unprotected sex. However, it will not be of any use if you are looking to terminate an existing pregnancy.

How Does A Morning After Pill Work?

A woman does not get pregnant during coitus; the sperm can actually survive for 5 days inside the vagina depending upon the environment, the health of the female and the sperm. The morning after pill starts showing its effects on the time duration between the conclusion of the act and becoming pregnant. The pill puts a temporary halt to the release of the egg from the ovary and this, in turn, prevents the sperm from getting the access it needs to fertilize the egg. If fertilization is stopped, women cannot get pregnant.

The Pros And Cons Of Emergency Contraceptive

The benefits of the morning after pills are:

• It is extremely easy to use and you just need to take them once in order to prevent getting pregnant.

• They are readily available and most don’t require any sort of prescriptions.

• They can be used up till 5 days after having sex.

The disadvantages of morning after pill are

• They don’t work like other birth control such as the shot, IUD, the patch and birth control pills and are not as effective as well

• They are quite expensive and you may not want to use them too frequently unless you are okay with burning a hole in your pocket.

• They don’t work if you have already started ovulating or if you have a body mass index which is above 25.

• They are not designed to be used as a long term birth control measure and should strictly be restricted to emergency usages.

Morning After Pill Side Effects

Emergency contraceptives can often cause a lot of side effects which may include nausea, vomiting, cramping and unexpected bleeding between periods. The side effects happen due to the hormonal imbalance that takes place due to the high level of estrogen and progesterone.

Are Morning After Pills Safe?

They are completely safe and the best form of emergency contraception which can be used multiple times. Though, emergency contraceptive pills must never be used as a birth control method.
