The safety of body building practice has always been a controversial subject owing to the greater number of health related risks associated with it, when compared to the number of benefits.

Body building is practice is followed specifically to enhance the muscle mass of the body through weight training. The stature obtained from body building, undeniably ensures strong and sturdy body frame as well as the bones, but there are also certain risks that come as a part and parcel to this practice.

Liver Failure: Intake of muscle relaxants, along with stimulants to control nervousness and heart rates, post workout to relax the body, has harmful effect on proper functioning of liver. It may also result in liver failure. 

Kidney Damage: The high protein diet, puts extreme pressure on kidneys for excretion. The over work of kidneys, poses a great risk of kidney damage.

Muscle and joint injuries: Excessive weight training, usually wears out the body and may cause muscular and joint injuries.

Degeneration of bones: Excessive protein content within body results in large amounts of sulphates as well as phosphates which are acidic in nature. This further, reduces the density of bones and increase the risk of osteoporosis.

Dehydration: The excessive protein intake via supplements, results in accumulation of ketones within the body, which is not excreted by the kidneys, hence, resulting in severe dehydration of the body.

Mental Disorders: Steroidal and substance abuse for body building, can often take a toll on mental health.

Image disorders: Body builders tend to get conscious about the body and may suffer from several disorders like dysmorphia, orthorexia nervosa and bigorexia.

Body building looks quite attractive and impressive, but it also has several risks associated with it. The ultimate decision lies in the hand of the individual, if all these risks are worth it.
