How to have a Positive Attitude in Life?

What can we say about positive attitude that you haven’t already heard from your mentors in life or read in self-help books? From renowned novelists and essayists like Frances Hodgson Burnett and Walt Whitman to world leaders like Winston Churchill, many have been vocal about the importance of positive attitude and how it is all that’s needed to get out of bad circumstances.

But while everyone keeps on telling us how important positive attitude is to overcome all obstacles in life, we are never told how exactly we can develop this new mentality. Well, that is why we are here today.

We presume nobody reading this post would disagree that positive attitude can turn your life around, and we are also certain about the fact that most would not know how positive attitude is developed in life. Do you have any clue regarding the same? It’s okay; just keep reading and you will find the answer you are looking for.

#1. Start The Day On A Positive Note

They say all’s well that ends well, but we beg to differ. We believe that all’s well that begins well. Your mornings or how you bring your day set the tone for how the rest of your day is going to be. You must have noticed that when you have a bad morning, no matter what pleasures may come your way during the rest of the day, nothing seems to turn your mood around. So in the same way, when you welcome the sun with a smile, nothing will be able to spoil your mood. Some people have morning rituals like listening to a motivating song or indulging in some positive affirmations. You can try any of these, as long as the results are there.


#2. Focus On Good Things In Your Life 

There is not a single person in this world who does not have challenges in his or her life. Every single one of us has good as well as bad things in our life. It is the things that we focus on that determine how happy we are going to be. Sure you are having trouble in one area, but do not let that take the charm away from all the things that are going well for you. For instance, if you feel like your career is in a rut, remember how amazing your family is or how much your partner loves you. Keep working to move ahead in career but do not let one down thing in your life drag your spirits down.

#3. Find Humor In Negative Situations

There is so much in this world that you can deal with just by laughing at the situation. Even the darkest and the most excruciating situations must have something that you can crack a joke about now or later. Humor can really help you get through some of the worst days of your life. All you have to do is find it.

#4. Take Failures As Lessons 

Who said you were perfect? Everyone knew that you were going to make mistakes in life and still does that the same will happen in future; whether you talk about your relationship, job or any other aspect of your life. Mistakes are inevitable. But what you can avoid is repeating them. Successful people are not the ones who do not make mistakes, but the ones who learn from them. In fact, there are no failures in life. Either you succeed at what you do, or you learn something, there is no path in the middle unless you make it.

#5. Indulge In Some Positive self-Talk

This may sound like another cliché to you but there is a reason why so many people swear by positive self-talk, and that reason is it works. The voice inside your head has more power than you give it credit for. It can kill your spirits and drag you down, and it can also give you a boost and take you to wherever you want to be. While we are urging you to go for some constructive self-talk, we would also like to recommend that you steer away from the dark side of it. Negative self-talk can easily creep up, especially when you are going through a rough phase. Thoughts like ‘I can never do this’ and ‘why did I even try it’ can internalize your feelings and cement your perception of yourself.


#6. Concentrate On The Present 

The reason that most of us develop a negative attitude towards life or ourselves is that we keep living in the past. We need to understand that things may have happened with us at some point but that time is now too far behind us. You cannot let one negative instance keep you from enjoying all the good things. Focus on what you have in your hand in the present moment. Not this day and not even the hour, just the moment. In most circumstances, it will make you realize that your life is not as bad as you were conceiving it to be.

#7. Surround Yourself With Positive People

The people we surround us with have a tremendous effect on us. They can give us a fresh, positive outlook on life and they can also turn us into an even bigger pessimist. Find positive people to be around can be a demanding task but eliminating negativity from your life before it entirely consumes you should be on the top of the list of your priorities. Do whatever you can think of to absorb the positivity of others and also focus on making a positive impact on the life and mindset of others. Yawning is not the only thing contagious in the world.


#8. Enjoy small Things In Life

It seems like this is a day for clichés, but what can we do; if it works, it works. Memorable occasions that bring you joy like graduation, wedding, and promotion are rare, and you cannot wait for these to bring some light to your life. Simple pleasures and small victories are what make experience a delight. If only you could develop the right attitude, watching the sunset with your partner or relishing an ice cream with your kids can be an unforgettable memory. What we mean to say is, do not wait for the happiness to find you, get out there and search out happiness.

#9. Take Responsibility Of Your Life

It falls upon you whether you want the victim attitude or that of the creator. You can either grin and complaint about why every bad thing happens with you or be in charge of whatever situation life puts you in. The first step from the victim mentality towards that of a creator or a leader is taking responsibility. Believe that you create your own life, are responsible for it and control your destiny. And nothing will be able to tell you otherwise. It is our attitude of blaming things on others that make us a pessimist and sparks other negative feelings within us.


Keeping a positive attitude is crucial as it determines almost everything in your life. It impacts your relationship, career, and in a way, you can say that it has a bearing on your entire future. Once you have developed a positive attitude and started to look at the bright side of things, you will be surprised by how amazing your life was even when you were wasting your time away whining about all the things that did not matter. You will realize how the worse thing about your life was your attitude and every other thing was just trivial.

It is of vital importance to keep a positive attitude in life. Your attitude not only determines how successful you will be in all your future endeavors but also how happy you will be with your life. A positive attitude is sometimes the only thing we need in order to get through a rough day. Without it, everything seems gloomy and you end up being a pessimist that no one likes to be around.  I say this from personal experience. I had a friend who had a negative attitude towards everything in life. Whenever things were uncertain, he imagined the worst case scenario and even when good things happened to him, he was not happy. It was okay as long as he spent time with us in a group and did not speak much but outside of that, no one wanted to spend time with him alone. He failed to make any close friends and today is in a dead-end job that he hates.  I suppose you do not want to be like him. So even if you have a negative attitude, I suggest you keep it to yourself and try to at least act happy around others. If you can't be something, then at least you can pretend to be it.  Also, I think a good way to develop positive attitude in life is to pay attention to the good in your life. Nobody is that unlucky that nothing good happens to them. It is just that the bad overshadows the good. If you want to develop a positive attitude, then start by
blowing away the dark clouds of negative thoughts and see what is good in your life. Another great way to develop positive attitude is to change the way you talk about things. Things may be bad if you talk about it an appropriate manner, it would not look so bad and this will have a huge impact on your mental. For instance, you can limit the use of the phrase ‘I cannot’ and instead, say something like ‘I need more practice’ or ‘that was a decent first attempt’. Your simple negative words can drag your morale down in no time.
