There's no particular way to mass unfollow people on Instagram as the app limits the range to just 200 per hour. Also, you'll have to wait for another hour to go about the process once again to increase non-followers (Instagram).
There are third party smartphone applications (Instagram unfollowers app) that help you with the same, but every program limits the number to 200. If you try to exceed the limit, Instagram would temporarily ban your account.

However, there are certain accounts that might not let the user wait for another hour to start unfollowing. Apart from this, Instagram unfollowers app/ tools like Cleaner, Unfollow Insta or Crowdfire will also not let you beat the limit of 200 (mass) unfollow per hour. #1. Log on to your Instagram account, open your personal profile and tap on the section that says Following. This is the one which mentions the number of people you are following on Instagram.
#2. The list of names will occur and to the right of it would be the Following button.
#3. Tap on it, go ahead of the warning window, and you'll promptly unfollow that particular profile.
#4. Repeat the steps with everyone else. But don't forget to exceed 200.
#5. If you are on a PC, open www.instagram.com, log in to your account and open your profile. Follow the same steps - open the following section, click the following button and surpass the warning window to unfollow.
