Imagine how difficult your life would be if you were missing just one limb. Wouldn’t every trivial everyday activity become a herculean task for you? Now, imagine not having two limbs. How about not having arms or legs at all? This is not a nightmarish hypothetical scenario that we are creating for you here; this is the story of Nick Vujicic who has spent 34 years of his life without any limbs at all.
What was expected to be just like any other birth by a Melbourne couple, turned out to be anything but normal when Nick came into this world on 4 December 1982! He was born with a rare congenital disorder, characterized by the absence of arms and legs. His mother refused to look at him and his father almost fainted, throwing up in the delivery room at the sight of his newborn child.
Nick suffers from a rare syndrome called phocomelia that causes severe birth defects, especially in the upper limbs of the body. People suffering from it are born with either absent or extremely shortened arm bones. In extreme cases, the upper bones of arms and legs are absent in a manner that hands and feet appear to be directly attached to the body.
Everyone knew life was not going to be easy for the little Nick and that is exactly what happened. His early years were particularly tough when he was ridiculed and bullied by other students at his school. Imagine a child being constantly mocked for being different and which is something that he does not understand. Nick not only suffered from the typical problems of a student’s life but also went through loneliness and depression as the harsh treatment by his peers took a toll on his psyche.
In those days of weakness, Nick thought what anyone in those circumstances would do, and he thought about ending his own life. At the age of 10, he went through a failed suicide attempt when the emotion, physical and mental struggle got too tough for him to handle.
He came to terms with his disability when his mother showed him a newspaper article about another person who had a similar disability. This made him realize that he was not the only one in the world going through this. This is when he decided to make the most of his situation and started to learn using his toes for playing and swimming. With just enough practice, Nick also taught himself to write with his toes.
After his first speaking engagement at the age of 19, Nick has become a world-renowned motivational speaker who travels the world attempting to inspire others to live their life to the fullest. An author, actor, musician, swimmer, motivational speaker and painter, Nick has achieved that perhaps many of us might never achieve in our lives. His memoir, 'Love Without Limits' became an international bestseller. Through his international non-profit organization named, Life Without Limbs, he campaigns against bullying.
His disability hasn’t kept him from enjoying the pleasures of life as Nick is happily married to Kanae Miyahara and is a father of two sons.
Nick Vujicic is a true inspiration to all of us. If a man with no arms and legs can achieve so much from life and do all the things that he wanted to, then there shouldn’t be anything stopping us from doing the same when we are born completely able. What may appear to us as the end of the world are merely short obstacles that we have to cross before we get to where we want to be. And in the words of Nick himself,
“If you can't get a miracle, become one.”
