India has recently shown an outburst of the cases of sexual assault which is terribly alarming. After all the mishappenings and protests against them, still, the situation has not been safe for girls and women. The situation is the same moreover whether it is a village or an urban area or a metropolitan city.
The basic issue is that of the attitude. A big example is the statement of one of the rapists of the 2012 Delhi case, Mukesh Singh, who was sentenced to death. Mukesh states: "..a decent girl won't roam around at 9 o'clock at night." The culprit says that if women are not "good," men have a right to "teach them a lesson" by raping them. "When being raped, she shouldn't fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape." In a documentary India's Daughter by BBC, Singh made these alarming comments.
The most horrible thing is that it is not just Mukesh who thinks like this, rather there is a big no. of people who think like this. It is time to realize the situation. It is not only about sexuality, it is equally about power, control and ruling. The women and girls are still not having the proper position and honor in the society, no matter what we claim. If a boy is roaming with many girls, he would be a stud, but if a girl is roaming with many boys, she would be a slut. So this double standard forms the base of the so-called justifications.
Another provoking situation is that if a girl is assaulted, the family of the victim many times does not report the case because in our society it could defame the girl. So even if the culprits are recognized, no reports. Actually, as an estimate, more than 90%cases are not registered in India. And the most shameful situation is that in the majority of the cases, the rapists are the close relatives. So whom to say and what to say? This could be a natural thought in the mind of the victim, but it actually provocateurs.
A well-known fact is that the stand of the police many times is not favorable to the victim. Our policemen also come from the society and there are many instances when the police showed a most irresponsible behavior, not even registered the case and humiliated the victim and her family.
The remaining gap is filled by the amazing statements of some of our politicians regarding rapes like sometimes boys commit mistakes and girls are actually responsible and it is the wearing of the girl that actually triggers rape. In this big democracy, it is really painful to see that some of the politicians can go that down for some sort of vote politics. This is a hard reality.
Correct it is that India is a big country and hence even if we suppose that out of 1000 people, just 1 person would be a criminal minded fellow, the total no of such persons become very big if we do the math. Our policing is not ready enough to prevent such situations. The policemen are mostly engaged in the protection of the politicians and those who are available for the public are having a big no. of responsibilities with lesser resources.
It is often discussed that our legal system also is not well equipped with proper rulings and also our judges are overloaded with cases. This slows down the process of trials and this gives chances to manipulate things and reduces the chances of justice.
But, the biggest threat is the ill attitude. This is something that must be taken most seriously. And to fix this issue, we need to fix the loopholes in our education system that does not care about ethics and the one and only goal of education have become to be materially successful.
There is much to do to create an ethical base for life. Once it changes, will change the scenario.
