Remembering Rani Lakshmi Bai, The Queen Of Jhansi, On Her 189th Death Anniversary

Being the first of women martyrs, a braveheart from adolescence and the greatest Indian queen warrior, Rani Laxmi Bai was one of the most outrageous and prominent freedom fighters during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. She became a national symbol of resistance for the British East India Company ruling on India at that time.

Signifying as a royal yet powerful ruler and fighter, Rani Laxmi Bai deserves all the recognition she gets. Remembering her on the 189th death anniversary, we take a glance at her history.

Things you should know about the woman who was much ahead of her time:

#1. She was affectionately called as Manu (real name Manikarnika) by everyone.

#2. She became the ruler of Jhansi at the young age of 18.

#3. Laxmibai was raised in a manner which was associated with raising sons at that time.

#4. She was also accustomed to riding horses (rather than palanquins) and had three of them too.

#5. She was very different from the other girls of her age and was more independent.

#6. Being trained at home, her learnings included fencing, horsemanship, and shooting.

#7. The mighty ruler of Jhansi got married to the then King of Jhansi at a very young age where she got the name Laxmibai.

#8. She was renamed in honor of goddess Lakshmi.

#9. She waged an extremely intricate fight against the British force in Jhansi.

#10. The British Army officer opposite her described Laxmibai as beautiful and clever.

#11. She protected Jhansi from being invaded by the other neighboring armies.

#12. She used to inspect the defense services in Jhansi herself.

#13. Her reign enabled the other women to pick up ammunitions and contribute towards saving Jhansi from British attacks.

#14. She fought a fierce war against the Britisher's attack in Jhansi with two swords in both her hands and her son Damodar tied to the back.

#15. Laxmibai died at the age of 22 during the battle of Gwalior.

Because of her courage, bravery, wisdom along with the progressive views, she still appears to be an example for women to look up to. At a time when misogynistic & patriarchal views are gaining attention, Rani Laxmi Bai still holds her place in our hearts.
