As long as there have been secrets, there have been conspiracy theories. 

While some are based on some evidence, many are just plain speculations that though spark our curiosity, have no proof behind.

#1. 9/11 was Staged

Soon after the events of 9/11, conspiracy theories came rolling out one after the other. While some alleged that stock market traders knew about the incident even before it happened, others are of the belief that cell phones made by the planes were fake. However, the most popular conspiracy theory associated with the event is that the World Trade Centre buildings collapsed due to controlled demolition.The US government staged the attack so that nobody would oppose an all-out war in the Middle East.

#2. CIA Murdered JFK

The world came to a standstill when the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy was publically assassinated during a political trip to Texas in November 1963. Some conspiracy theorists believe that anti-communists in the CIA plotted JFK’s assassination to maintain tension with Cuba and the Soviet Union. Another objective, as claimed by many, to kill the president was to prevent the withdrawal of US forces from Vietnam.

#3. William Shakespeare Took Credit For Another Writer's Work

William Shakespeare has also not been spared by conspiracies. The reason being that not much is known about the life of the great writer. Some historians claim that Shakespeare’s entire family was poor and illiterate and there is no proof that he was educated. Adding to the belief is the fact that the English poet was found to have signed and spelled his name differently on every document ever found. Some historical records mention him not as a writer, but an actor. The poems and plays credited to him are believed to be the works of another English playwright, Christopher Marlowe.

#4. Moon Landing Was Faked

July 20, 1969, was the historic day when humanity took a giant leap and landed the first man on the moon. However, some theories say that the six moon landings between 1969 and 1972 were faked by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The Soviet Union beat the US when they landed the first human-made object on the surface of the moon in 1959, and desperate for a win over the socialist state, the US government faked lunar landings.

#5. Aliens Live In Area 51

There is hardly any place on earth as secretive as the Area 51. The US government did not even acknowledge its existence up until a few years back when it admitted having a protected military site in Nevada but discarded the rumors that it had anything to do with aliens. Many believe that the remains of the extra-terrestrial spaceship, which crashed at a ranch in the Roswell in mid-1947, are kept here. Whereas, some go to the extent of claiming that they have seen aliens in the mysterious facility and even worked on cloning the alien DNA.
