Here is the list of some of the best sportspersons of the year 2016 from the world's top 6 sports events:

1. Soccer/Football

This year, Portuguese professional footballer Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded Ballon d'Or award, the most prestigious award for a footballer. This award is given by France Football to a male footballer based on his performance over the last one year.

There were three strong aspirants for the award- Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Luis Suarez. Ronaldo was declared the winner of Ballon d'Or award based on the voting of the respected pool of football journalists.

In the 2015-16 season, Ronaldo dominated the world football. His wonderful contributions have helped Real Madrid to win Champions League. 2. Cricket

India's off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been recognized as the ICC Cricketer of the Year 2016. He has also claimed the Test Cricketer of the Year award. Currently, Ashwin is the top-ranked Test bowler. Between 2015 and 2016, the ICC' voting period, Ashwin played eight test matches, made 336 runs and got 48 wickets. He played 19 T20 Is where he picked up 27 wickets in the same period. South Africa's Quinton de Kock, wicketkeeper cum batsman, was acknowledged as ODI Player of the Year. Since September 2015, De Kock has played 22 matches and made 1175 runs which include five centuries and three half centuries

Basketball is a very popular sport in the United States. It is one of the most paying sports in the world. The best basketball player is recognized with NBA Most Valuable Player Award. This year, the award was given to Stephen Curry, an American professional basketball player.

4. Tennis

Tennis is an individual based game and it is equally popular for men and women around the world. In tennis, both the men's and women's competition are conducted in parallel in all the major competitions. In tennis, four Grand Slam events are held every year- Wimbledon, the French Open, Australian Open, and the US Open.

 In 2016, Serbia's Novak Djokovic, who was two-time defending champion in Gentleman's single, won two Grand Slam events- French Open and Australian Open. The 2016 Wimbledon champion and US Open champion in men's single was Scottish professional tennis player Andy Murray and Swiss professional tennis player Stan Wawrinka, respectively.

American professional tennis player Serena Williams is as successful as Steffi Graf. Her success in professional tennis has made some commentators and sports critics to consider as the greatest female tennis player.

Though this year she could win only Wimbledon Championship, she has been ranked as world No.1 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) on six distinguished occasions.

6. Badminton

Badminton was first developed in British India. Gradually, it became popular in all the Asian countries. Like tennis, all the major badminton events are held for both men and women side-by-side.

This year, Chinese Taipei shuttler Tai TzuYing bagged the highest prize money than any other shuttlers in the world. At present, she is also the world's no.1 badminton player as per World Badminton Federation.

India's P.V. Sindhu reached the final at Rio Olympic games 2016 and played amazingly. Unfortunately, she lost the final match to European champion Carolina Marin.
