The National Family Health Survey released this week has found out that due to stringent law implementation by the Government of sale and manufacture of tobacco products, its use by men and women has declined significantly.
According to this survey, tobacco use in India among men has decreased in 2015 to 44 percent. This percentage was 57 in the year 2005-06. Among women, the percentage has come down to 6.8 from 10.8 percent. In Delhi, the prevalence of tobacco usage among men has reduced by 10 percent in these ten years. The consumption of tobacco has reduced by only 2 percent among women in Delhi in the similar period.

Maharashtra is better placed when it come to consumption of tobacco among men and women. While the instance of tobacco consumption has decreased by 12 percent among men, it has reduced by half among women. While 10.5 percent women were addicted to tobacco products during 2005-06, the number has reduced to 5.8 percent in 2015-16.
This is the fourth such survey in this series and gives information on population, health, and nutrition for different states in India. Bhavna Mukhopadhyay, the Chief Executive Voluntary Health Association of India pointed out that steps like graphic health depiction on 85% of the product have led to significant decrease in tobacco consumption.
