Ice box is an insulated cabinet with a partition of ice which is used for preserving food, beverages, etc.
The hollow space of the ice box is lined with zinc or tin and other effective insulating materials like straw, sawdust, and cork. A large block of ice is placed in a tray or compartment near the top of the box.
Cold air circulates down and around storage compartments in the lower section. In earlier days iceboxes were made of wood for the ease of construction, insulation.
But in modern day’s ice box are made up of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS). EPS being a good thermal insulator helps to maintain the temperature of the ice box as required and prevents the ice for melting and the longevity of the food to remain fresh is increased. A good ice box packaging helps to preserve the quality of food.
Since, no harmful chemical is used in manufacturing the ice boxes; the quality of the food is always good. As no electricity is used to maintain the temperature inside the ice box, energy consumption is also very less.
