What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a complex mental ailment that afflicts approximately 1% of the population.

The psychiatric disorder can be both chronic and generic and can strike at any age. In most of the cases, the symptoms become visible in patients in late twenties or early thirties. The afflicted person usually faces difficulty in distinguishing between what is real and what is imagined.

One of the most common symptoms that patients with Schizophrenia experience is delusions or hallucinations. The delusions imply to false beliefs that are not based in reality, and on the other hand, hallucinations consist of imagined perceptual experiences like hearing imaginary sounds or seeing something that is not real.


Symptoms of Schizophrenia

Individuals who have Schizophrenia may also exhibit other symptoms like

•    Minimal emotional expression
•    Social withdrawal( Not able to connect with others)
•    engaging in bizarre behaviors
•    difficulty organizing one's thoughts
•    Speaking in a way, that does not make sense to others
•    Unable to take decisions
•    Unable to pay attention

Types of Schizophrenia

In medical science, Schizophrenia is further categorized into five types

•    Paranoid Schizophrenia- The sufferer experiences the symptom of different types of delusions as well as auditory hallucinations.
•    Disorganized Schizophrenia- The patient exhibits the symptoms of disorganized speech and behavior.
•    Catatonic Schizophrenia- In this type of Schizophrenia, the patient feels difficulty in moving.
•    Undifferentiated Schizophrenia- Individuals suffering from this state may experience the symptoms of delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech or behavior.
•    Residual Schizophrenia- In this variation of Schizophrenia, the person cannot communicate properly and seems withdrawal from daily activities.
