Who is El Chapo?

The new series by Netflix El Chapo is inspired by the life of a real person and after the biopic series on Pablo Escobar has captivated the audience, they will soon get acquainted with the life of the other most dangerous drug lord.

The life of El Chapo would sound like something that thriller action movies are made of. A man who lives life king size and carries out large drug syndicates while managing to elude the police services. What sounds like a movie plot, was actually the life of this famous man, who despite his crime has become a very well-known figure.

El Chapo

Most would only hear about Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman when the Netflix series on the drug lord is released for the audience but many are already acquainted with this name. In the 1970s two names emerged out as the most dangerous drug lords of all time, they were El Chapo and Pablo Escobar. Coming from the Sierra Madre mountains, El Chapo soon had amassed a huge wealth. The journey of El Chapo began in the 1980s when he was a low-level member of a notorious group that managed most of the drug trafficking in Mexico during that time. The group was Guadalajara Cartel, a dreaded organization that had kidnaped, tortured and killed US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent Enrique ‘Kiki’ Camarena. The leader of the group was eventually arrested.

Guzman and his partners soon took over and then the ingenious idea of using narco-tunnels came into existence. These tunnels were specially created to traffic drugs between the US-Mexico border and worked splendidly for El Chapo Guzman. The tunnels proved very efficient in moving cocaine at a great speed and this had later earned El Chapo the title of El Rapido, or the quick one.

El Chapo's Iconic Escape

The dangerous drug lord has always been a pain for law enforcement as he is a master escape strategist. This elusive Mexican was the mastermind behind the explosion of subterranean networks that were used to smuggle huge amounts of narcotics across the U.S. He was extremely difficult to catch hold of because he made use of his tunnels to plan all his escapes. He escaped prison in a laundry cart in 2001 and later after his 2014 escape, El Chapo was restricted to a maximum-security federal prison. However, once again, the crime lord escaped authorities. His escape was so well detailed and planned that people are still in shock over it. He had built a tunnel right through his prison and it was extremely well constructed with ventilation ducts, stairs and a motorbike on rails. The tunnel ended in a neighboring home that was under construction. It ran for a total of 1600 yards. Currently, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has been extradited to the US, where he now faces trial.
