Why does dark chocolate taste bitter?

You may be aware of the fact that chocolates contain the solid cocoa content.

The quantity of the cocoa solids varies from one chocolate to the other. In white chocolate, the cocoa solids are less as compared to the sugar content. And in the case of the dark chocolate, the quantity gets reversed, and it contains a very high content of cocoa solids and a small percentage of sugar or fat. For such reason, the dark chocolate tastes bitter and less sugary.

However, due to the low amounts of sugar and fat, dark chocolate is considered a healthy option for the human body. Healthy dark chocolate contains 70% of cocoa (cacao) or more and is packed with antioxidants.

Here are some of the amazing health benefits of dark chocolate

  • •    Dark chocolate improves blood flow and keeps your heart healthy. The flavonoids present in dark chocolate protect the body from free radical damage.

  • •    Eating dark chocolate enhances the flow of blood to the brain, and it boosts alertness and performance.

  • •    By keeping the blood vessels healthy, dark chocolate keeps you protected from different ailments like hypertension and diabetes.

  • •    Due to the presence of phenyl-ethylamine (PEA) in dark chocolate it improves your mood and encourages the brain to release endorphins and serotonin.
