Reading and watching are poles apart and both have their gains. Reading a book is cool and fantastic while watching TV would give that feeling, but not as same as a book. Reading enlightens more than watching TV. It encourages the mind to imagine and enlarge its view.
While watching TV just gives the catharsis effect. Through books, we gain myriad knowledge and through books, we are designed. From our childhood, books play a major role in our life. Without books, we wouldn’t be holding a degree and have a good job.
Books serve as our boon companion. They make us smart, clever, calm, enriched and happy. Susan Wiggs says, “You're never alone when you're reading a book.” We get to ponder over something when we read and we feel like we have many friends. They teach us, guide us and mold us. Henry Miller in the book The Books in my Life says, “A book is not only a friend, but it also makes friends for you. When you have possessed a book with mind and spirit, you are enriched.” Books help us to make friends when we share it with someone else.
When we read a book, we feel as if we are a part of the tale and that makes reading unique. The joy of reading is felt only when we take the journey with the character of the book. A mysterious tale makes us sit on the edge of our seats till we finish the story. Likewise, the adventurous one leads us through an awesome adventure of our own. Reading makes us embark upon a journey to wherever we want. It is like a ride through all the roads of life.
Louis L’Amour says, “For one who reads, there is no limit to the number of lives that may be lived, for fiction, biography, and history offer an inexhaustible number of lives in many parts of the world, in all periods of time.” Through books, we get to see the world through our imagination. The trail in our imagination makes us enraptured in it and we feel like we are in a trance.
Reading makes us comprehend the world in a perfect manner. We get to know about every kind of people, their language, and customs and so on. The gripping effect of books is amazing. It keeps us occupied in a world of our imagination. In television, we know what the hero and the heroine look like. But in a book, we get to imagine our heroes and heroines and we have fun with it.
In the book Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murakami writes, “I go back to the reading room, where I sink in the sofa and into the world of The Arabian Nights. Slowly, like a movie fadeout, the real world evaporates. I'm alone, inside the world of the story. My favorite feeling in the world.” One feels like he or she is the protagonist of the tale.
Books make us divulge the true meaning of life. It increases the vitality of our mind. We learn to be more creative. We learn new vocabulary, get better ideas, and most importantly we learn to write. Our mind takes in various creative thoughts through books and we get enhanced.
Imagine when ages back no one had TV, books where the only source of entertainment for them. Thus, books have been there for ages past and its value will never diminish through time as we get a lot more from it than watching TV. David T. W. McCord’s says, “Books fall open; you fall in.” Fall in and escapade.
