What Life Lessons Can You Learn From Cancer Survivors?

Cancer is one of the few diseases that the world has not been able to find a cure of. The fact that it claims more lives in the US and around the world than any other disease makes it a deadly killer.

They say diseases don’t discriminate. You might be anyone, and you still won’t be spared. The deadly disease has affected everyday people and celebrities alike. However, it surely doesn’t mean the end of the world. There are many stories of people across the world who have had successful battles with cancer, a lot of celebrities also have similar stories to share.

As the world celebrated National Cancer Survivors' Day on the first Sunday of June, here is a list of all those superstars who fought with the deadly disease and came on top of it:

Ben Stiller

The Zoolander and Night at the Museum star, revealed on October 4, 2016, that he had survived prostate cancer. He spoke in detail about the struggle on Howard Stern's radio show, and separately recounted his experience in an essay published by Medium. "It came out of the blue for me," Stiller told Stern of his June 2014 diagnosis. The actor said about the test that September declared him cancer-free.

Christina Applegate

She was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy. After successfully recovering from her illness, she now leads many campaigns to try and create awareness about breast cancer.

Hugh Jackman

The Wolverine discovered he had cancer back in 2013. Since then, he’s undergone treatment several, times but his cancer just keeps on coming back, most recently in 2017 for the 6th time. He has however stayed strong and continues to charm as ever. He has also used urged people to understand the importance of sunscreen. Something, which he thinks was the reason for his cancer.

Michael C. Hall

The Dexter Star is a survivor of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He had a long and secret battle with cancer but came on top in 2010.

Yuvraj Singh

Indian cricketing sensation was diagnosed with cancer only after India won their 2nd World Cup in 2011. Yuvi played a crucial part in India’s victory, but after the competition, cancer meant an end to his illustrious career. He, however, fought back like a true king to win the cup of life and also made a comeback to the Indian team.

Mark Ruffalo

Ruffalo had a vivid dream in 2001 that he had cancer. He went to see the doctor make sure that it was just a dream. It, however, turned out that he indeed had brain cancer. After a successful surgery, he was cancer free and in one the interviews he gave after recovering he said, “After the brain tumor had happened, I realized I love acting, I’ve always loved it, I may never get a chance to do it again.”

Erin Andrews

Dancing With The Stars co-host, Andrews revealed in early January this year, of her secret battle with cancer during the entire National Football League (NFL) season. She also told in an interview that she underwent surgeries twice in 2 months and is now cancer-free.

Shannen Doherty

Widely known for her roles in the television programs Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed, Shannen Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015. She has received a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy as part of her treatment.

Phil Lesh

One of the founding members of the iconic rock band Grateful Dead, Lesh was diagnosed with prostate cancer in October 2006 and had to undergo surgery as part of its treatment. He would again fight cancer on two more occasions after almost a decade but ultimately won the battle.

Rita Wilson

Actress, performer, producer and spouse of actor Tom Hanks, Wilson, announced in April 2015 that she had been diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma (a type of breast cancer) and had since undergone a bilateral mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

Eric Abidal

Everyone has their own destiny, said Abidal in an interview. The legendary footballer who played for many top clubs in his career was diagnosed with cancer twice that almost ended his career. The fighter, however, came back from it and went on to represent Barcelona for years to come.

Lance Armstrong

Cancer is a devastating disease and doesn’t spare anyone. It doesn’t discriminate. When Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1996, it sent shock waves down the entire world. Cancer had got onto one of the 100 Fittest Men Of All Time. However, like a true fighter, he came back from it in just a year's time.

Wanda Sykes

While undergoing a routine breast reduction surgery in 2011, it was discovered that Wanda Sykes had very early stage breast cancer, known as DCIS, or ductal carcinoma in situ. With cancer on her mother’s side, Sykes was fearful it would get worse and decided to undergo a double mastectomy. “I just wanted the best odds,” she told People magazine. “I made my decision because I love life.”

Giuliana Rancic

TV star Giuliana Rancic announced on The Today Show in 20011 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. However, she underwent a few surgeries and finally came out cancer free the following year and in an interview said, “If I could erase all this, I would. But I can’t, so I look at the positive. It made me a stronger and a better person. It shifted my priorities.”

Manisha Koirala

The successful Bollywood actress was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. After a successful treatment of the disease, she has been cancer-free ever since. However, fighting ovarian cancer transformed the diva in many ways, and the actress says she has now grown to appreciate life. Koirala now says she has grown on to understand the importance of life and further added,” “I think cancer helps to transform a person… It affected me so much that it enabled me to grow, appreciate life and honor my body”.

These are just a few instances of famous people battling cancer and proving that there is indeed a life beyond cancer. It is a reality. These superstars are an inspiration to the whole world and teach us to never give up in life. Despite suffering from such a hazardous ailment, they chose to fight, and look how they have risen. So, never give up!
