When you are invited to a formal dinner or to a corporate party, you will be sitting with strangers. Staying well acquainted with the dinner table ethics and etiquette can not only prove that you are moral and well-behaved person, but your guests may feel obliged to communicate with you.
Here are some common dinner table etiquettes that you need to keep in mind
Getting seated
• When the dinner is announced, wait for the other guests to approach the table, and never rush to the table ahead of them.
• When there are elder people in the guest list, it is better to allow them to precede you at the table.
• Be seated only after all the other guests have gathered around the table and are ready to sit on their respective chairs.
Handle all the table equipment accurately
• Once seated, place the napkins on your lap and be observant of the needs of others and see that food passed to them.
• Do not start filling your plate first, unless the host asks you to do so. It is a bad habit to grab the food.
• Avoid talking unpleasant or objectionable topics with the other guests.
Eat quietly and do not offend others
• Try to eat your food with your mouth closed, and try not to make unwanted chewing sounds, as it can irritate others.
• Keep your mouth empty when you drink water or beverages.
• Make use of napkins to clean the food stuck to your face or lips.
