Do you really think downloading songs from the internet would hurt big players in music industries? First, let me jump to the conclusion that downloading songs without paying money is OKAY. There is no problem. And now, I'll state some reasons for it with some facts. Many people say that downloading music without paying money is unethical. First, let me remind you, it's not unethical. You are not doing anything which hurts your conscience, you are simply sharing music. Yes I have to agree that it's illegal. But if you look at that in another perspective, the admin of the website which gives you music is doing a crime, not you. And it's all about money. I'll explain. Music Industry = US$130 Billion global business. People in music industry are already making a lot of money. So even if we download anything, it doesn't matter to them. They get money from music channels which show songs of particular movie or album by paying them royalty fees. Plus, there are advertisements, caller tones, ring tones which borrow their music and they get money through us. I mean we pay to mobile subscribers and they pay to music companies, composers, etc.
Whenever anything is downloaded from the internet, indirectly, a publicity of that artist is done. People like Anurag Kashyap rose from torrents downloading, as his movies were banned. Many Hollywood movies are appreciated, great directors are born because of the internet world. So if the internet is doing anything for them, it's publicity. When singers, musicians go for a tour or live concert, they earn money from there as well. So if you make a song, it's going to earn some amount of money anyway. Internet just doesn't matter. And for the record, there are many online players like Saavn.com, Gaana.com which are giving us music in legal manner. There is 9% increase in the digital music industry sales between the year 2011 and 2012.
Nowadays many films production companies, music companies release their songs on youtube, hotstar, etc. If you are uploading a song on the site. It may be a video, but the mp3 copy is going to that site. Many big music companies like Universal and Sony release their music on youtube via Vevo platform. Vevo has an unbeatable record of having 60 million unique visitors a month. Vevo is a great source for online music. It's free and legal. So, all in all, there is no problem in downloading songs from the internet. Because not everyone can afford to buy a CD worth Rs 500 just to listen to limited number of songs.
