Journey To Fame

Born in the Bahamas, Kimbo Slice moved to the US and grew up in South Florida. He rose to fame in the early 2000s when his street fighting videos became viral on the internet. The 'Rolling Stone' magazine decided to write an article on the phenomenon of online street fight videos and declared Slice as ‘the undisputed online king of the underground bare-knuckle world.’

With his huge popularity, he soon turned towards professional mixed martial arts and signed with 'EliteXC' in 2007 and quickly became the main-event fighter. In 2009, he appeared on 'The Ultimate Fighter' and fought twice in the 'Ultimate Fighting Championship' (UFC). Soon he took the world of boxing by storm and remained unbeaten in his three-year career. At the time of his death, he was signed to Bellator, scheduled to fight in July.

The Mysterious Death

In early June last year, Kimbo Slice was admitted to Northwest Medical Center in Margate, Florida after complaints of acute abdominal pain, shortness of breath and nausea. After tests were conducted, it was found that he had a liver mass and congestive heart failure and soon he was moved to the intensive care unit and put on the ventilator.

As Slice’s complications escalated, doctors realized that he was in need of an urgent heart transplant. While he was in the process of preparation for being transferred to a medical facility in Cleveland, where he was to be put on an organ donors list, he succumbed to his conditions on 6 June at the age of just 42 years.

As the news of the fighter’s death came out, several speculations and theories also started making the rounds to the public, with people wondering how Kimbo Slice died at such young age. Since Kimbo had a history of anabolic drug use and also had been tested positive for the same, many alleged that testosterone and nandrolone which are known to increase the chances of heart failure played a role in the mixed martial artist’s death.

Another thing which is believed to have contributed towards Kevin Ferguson’s early demise is weight cutting, which is a practice of quick weight loss before fights. Slice is known to have struggled with weight cutting through his entire career as an athlete in combat sports after he started as a street fighter with virtually no restrictions.

Slice last fought Dhafir Harris ‘Dada 5000’ back in February last year. Though he won, his victory was nullified after being tested positive for steroids.

Though Kimbo did not have a very long career in MMA, he certainly was the most amazing athlete in the sport. Share your thoughts on the sudden demise of the fighter and his several memorable fights through your comments in the dedicated section below. We would love to hear from you.
