World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8 every year. Since 2008, the United Nations started celebrating it officially, before which the Ocean Institute of Canada had been celebrating it unofficially since 1992.
At the first ever UN Ocean Conference in New York, Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General in his statement said, “We must put aside short-term national gain, to prevent long-term catastrophe. Conserving our oceans and using them sustainably is preserving life itself.” The conference is being held from June 5-9.

Why are Oceans Indispensable?
-They are the biggest source of water on this planet, at about 97%.
-The coastal regions survive on the food they get from the ocean through fishing.
-There are resources under the seabed like oil and minerals that may have medicinal properties.
-Oceans accommodate coral reefs, complex ecosystems which inhabit millions of life forms.
-They increase tourism of a region. Haven’t we all been to a beach at least once in our lives?
