We are surrounded by technology. That makes another thing quite certain: believing tech myths. We have all accepted many tech-related myths without ever knowing if they have any validity.

#1. A Magnet can Erase your Computer’s Data

Remember how back in the day when a tiny magnet could delete the entire data from the floppy disk? Well, we have come a long way since then. Though it is not technically wrong that a magnet can erase data from your laptop’s hard drive, it would take a powerful magnet with a concentrated magnetic field to wipe out your files.

#2. Using Cell Phones At Gas Stations Is Hazardous

No matter how many times the attendant at the gas station has told you that you shouldn’t use your phone while filling the tank of your car, your basic device just isn’t capable of blowing up an entire station. Don’t you think governments would go crazy if that was possible?

#3. More Bars Means Better Service

Although having more bars would help, it does not necessarily imply a better service. The bars at the top of your phone merely indicate how close is the nearest cell tower is to you. While it might help in offering you better service, there are a number of factors in play here, such as the number of people currently using the network.

#4. Cell Phones Cause Brain Cancer

There is no denying that our smartphones emit radiations that human tissues can absorb, but there is no study that can conclude to a certainty that using cell phones can lead to cancer of the brain in humans or animals.

#5. Private Browsing is Private

Most browsers today come with an incognito mode, in which, no cookies or history is saved through browsing. Though you may be regularly using it for shopping, and “other things,” we are not judging, it isn’t entirely foolproof. If you believe that it would keep your service provider or law enforcement agencies from figuring out your browser history, well, think again.

#6. Using Third-Party Charges Will Kill Your Phone’s Battery

First, you have to understand that a third-party charger and a cheap knock-off are two different things. If you have lost or accidentally broken the in-box charger, you received with your gadget, invest in an accessory from a reputable company instead of buying a low-cost inferior product. If you ever come across a dirt cheap or inexpensive accessories from Apple or Samsung, they are probably imitated goods. Saving a few bucks is not worth it if it kills your entire device.

#7. Mac Computers Don’t Get Virus

If you have been using your MacBook Air or Macbook Pro without any anti-virus, then a hacker from across the globe is just waiting for you to punch in your bank account details on a website. Yes, Apple computers are also vulnerable, and even though the company marketed its products as impenetrable by PC viruses, the company had to change its strategy in 2012 when thousands of Macs fell prey to Trojans.

#8. Don’t Leave Your Phone Plugged-in Overnight

It is a popular belief that if you leave your laptop or smartphone plugged in overnight, it will damage your battery. Though it may have been true a few years back, modern lithium-ion batteries are smart enough to stop charging when they are at full capacity. So from now on, forget about your gadget and sleep like a baby.

#9. More Megapixels means Better Picture Quality

This is among the most common myths. Though megapixels may play a role in determining the quality of the picture, there are some other factors as well that play a crucial role. The lens of the camera, the sensor used, and circuitry are among the few.

#10. Emptying Recycle Bin Erases Data Completely

When you delete a file from the Trash, the computer merely de-allocates the space on hard drive to be rewritten, and bits of information remain nonetheless. A skillful hacker can easily piece it together and get his hands on what you believed was forever gone. If you are using a Mac computer, choose the “secure empty trash,” and on PC, use Sdelete utility tool.

Leaving Phone Plugged-in Overnight Kills Battery

Couldn't agree more with the 8th point. I have been leaving my phone charger plugged in almost every single night for many a months now but the battery back up is just as good as it was when I bought the device. 

Also, many people believe that standing next to a microwave is bad for you. The radiation does leak from the appliance but its amount is far below what scientist consider harmful for the human body. Don't you think the FDA would do something if our microwaves could kill us?
