What are Hiccups? What causes them?

Hiccups are a sudden change in our body which is not in control. It is the involuntary contraction of the diaphragm. The medical term for hiccups is singultus or SDF (synchronous diaphragmatic flutter).

Hiccups can happen anytime with no specific reason. There is an alarm for it, and hiccups can happen now and then. In the most of the cases, hiccups are resolved without any sort of treatment involved in a couple of minutes or seconds sometimes. Hiccups usually happen with a rhythm. Though it might sound a little weird that does happen many times we don’t really realize it. The gap between every hiccup is usually constant. People can find it a little nuisance. But, if you are experiencing hiccups for a prolonged time and causing a problem that you are conscious about, you should take treatments about it.

What Causes Them?

There is no specific conclusion that any expert has come across as far as the mechanism of hiccups is concerned. However, some illness or conditions are related to the cause of getting hiccups:

• The gas present in the stomach (if there is) can get pressed against the diaphragm.

• When you each too much of food.

• the speed of eating your food is way too rapid.

• If you eat food when it is too hot, it can irritate the phrenic nerve. The phrenic nerve is located just near to esophagus.

• If you feel a sudden change in temperature in your body.

• When a lot of fizzy drinks are consumed in one go. They can also create gas in the stomach. And gas can press the diaphragm.

• There are several people who get hiccups after eating too spicy food. If your taste buds are not familiar with the extreme spicy food, that can also cause hiccups.

• If someone eats a lot of dry food, like dry bread, they are also prone to get hiccups very frequently.

• There are some medications as well which can cause hiccups as a side effect such as anesthesia, opiates, corticosteroids, benzodiazepines barbiturates, and methyldopa.

• There are people who also have hiccups when they consume alcohol.
