It can be used to refer to the victory of any player in a racing game. It can simply be used to refer to any kind of victory attained. You can use this abbreviation in the following ways:

#1. If you are playing an online game and you got a flag that eventually helped you to win, then you did that for winning right? So can say “I captured the flag FTW.”

#2. It can be used to cheer someone just by constantly saying things like “go ahead and do it FTW,” “you can do it, and it’s FTW.”

#3. You can also go ahead and use it while texting regarding day to day life events, for example, you worked extra hard for a test and scored really well in the test. Then you can use “I studied extra hard FTW.”

This abbreviation was used as ‘F*** the world’ earlier. There have been times when it was used referring to this meaning. But, this usage has been long replaced with the use of ‘for the win.' It has all been an evolution, where the better meaning replaced the not so appropriate meaning. Today it is widely used to denote the meaning of the word as ‘for the win.’
