What is an ideal sitting posture?

When we talk about posture, it is the correct balance and position in which one holds the body upright in contradict to the gravity in any position of sitting, standing, or lying down.

In order to put minimum strain on the muscles and the ligaments around the joints and especially spinal cord, a lot of body training is required for performing various activities such as sitting, standing, etc.

Proper posture will help prevent many disorders, where the back, shoulders should be straight.

• There is reduced muscular strain when the posture is properly aligned.

• Major bone disorders common in today’s young generation such as arthritis can be prevented when one sits in a proper posture that helps to reduce the abnormal use of the joints, especially of the knee joint.

• Incorrect posture might create a problem for the spinal cord.

• Proper posture will make you feel less tired, less energy will be utilized and put less strain on the muscles.

• There is reduce a backache and thus muscular pain.

The correct sitting position will require following points to be considered:

• While sitting on the chair, one should take care about the posture. Back and shoulders should be aligned and straight. The buttocks should touch the back of the chair.

• While sitting, all the three back curves should appear normal.

• The knees should always be bent at a right angle.

• One should avoid sitting with legs crossed.

• Your feet should be flat and touching the floor. If necessary one can use foot rest.

• At workstation also, proper ergonomics needs to be maintained.
