What is international Space Station?

International Space Station or ISS can be defined as a habitable artificial satellite in low Earth Orbit.

The first component of International Space Station was launched into orbit in the year 1998 and it is now the largest artificial orbit body which can even be seen by naked eye from Earth.

ISS comprises of external trusses, pressurized modules, solar arrays and numerous other components. The different components of ISS have been launched by American Space Shuttles and Russian rockets over the years.

ISS can essentially be considered as a space research station where research is conducted in a scientific manner. Experiments covering various fields as human biology, physics, meteorology and astronomy are conducted in the International Space Station.

The first expedition arrived on this space station on 1st November 2000 and since then it has been continuously inhabited for over 16 years.


Purpose of International Space Station

The International Space Station has been established with the intention of being a scientific laboratory and observatory. It is also intended to be a transportation site for any new missions to Moon, various asteroids and Mars.

Expeditions can run up to six months and astronauts from different countries including Russia and United States of America have been part of missions to this ISS.
