Brazil issues first license for sale of a cannabis-based drug

Brazil has reportedly become the first country in the world to issue a license for sale of a drug which has been made from cannabis. This oral spray for the treatment of multiple sclerosis has been developed from marijuana and will be sold in Brazil under the name Mevatyl.

This license for development of a drug from cannabis has come after many years of legal battle in Brazil since many groups who were opposed to the move had filed court cases to stop such a development.

This drug has been developed by GW Pharmaceuticals which has been founded in 1998. Reportedly, the company was founded to look into medical benefits of cannabis and now after development of this drug many large pharmaceutical companies are looking for opportunities to take over this company.

Interestingly, growing and possessing small amount of cannabis-based products is not a crime in Brazil. Buying and selling of cannabis-based products still are a crime in Brazil. Colombia and Peru which are two of the leading drug producers in world are a major threat for Brazil and this move is also seen as a counter step from Brazil to tackle this menace from these neighboring countries.

Uruguay has also legalized cannabis cultivation and this move by Brazil is seen as a detrimental step in curbing illegal cultivation.
