The Academy Awards are the most prestigious movie awards which every moviemaker dreams of winning. All the hard work that is put into the making of a blockbuster bears result only after its commercial and critical success. While box office decides the money part, the Academy weighs it on the scale of performance. Though there are movies that gave its audience a great cinematic experience but yet failed to win an Oscar.
You would be surprised to know that some of the greatest cult movies of all time were snubbed at the Oscars. Below is a list of some of the most famous movies that failed to make a mark at the Academy Awards.
#1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Everybody had their hopes pinned on Shawshank Redemption to win at the Academy Awards in 1995. The movie had everything, a power packed script based on the novella by Stephen King, great soundtrack and brilliant acting by Morgan Freeman. The film was nominated for seven Oscars but lost to Forrest Gump. Nevertheless, it remains a classic and is well-appreciated by everyone.

#2. Fight Club (1999)
Certain genres no matter how well presented just don’t go down well with the Academy members and the movie despite the fact that it had a deep theme, couldn’t manage even to get more than one nomination for itself, which was for Best Effects. The movie went on to become a cult in itself.

#3. Leon (1994)
The film that starred two of the best actors of Hollywood; Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman went on to become one to gain reorganization as one of the best movies. Though the Academy didn’t see it fit even to receive a nomination, this is not the first time that Gary Oldman was snubbed by the Academy.

#4. Psycho (1960)
Alfred Hitchcock is a name that resonates with every lover of thriller and horror movies. He has made a place for himself among the best directors but yet the Academy kept overlooking all his films. His famously acclaimed movie Psycho failed to win any award.

#5. The Shinning (1980)
Another masterpiece that was based on a novella by Stephen King was The Shinning. The movie had Jack Nicholson in one of the best performances of his acting career, but yet it didn’t receive even a single nomination. The Academy has always looked down upon the films in the horror genre and doesn’t see them fit enough for an Oscar.

#6. How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
This epic saga based on the friendship of a young Viking and a fearsome dragon won hearts across the globe. The movie has a touching storyline and amazing visuals. It even got nominated for the Best Animated Film and Best Original Score at the Oscars, and would have probably won, had it not been for another equally brilliant Toy Story 3.

#7. Memento (2000)
Christopher Nolan has proved his mettle and made a name for himself as one of the finest directors of our generation. His recent movies have been great hits, but even in the past he has created brilliant cinema; one of them is Memento. The psychological thriller is based on a brilliant concept and is one of Nolan’s best work, but the Academy felt differently and refused even to consider it for the best film or director category.

#8. The Martian (2015)
This emotional, thrilling and humorous sci-fi movie was one of its kind, and the fabulous performance by Matt Damon made it a brilliant watch for the viewers. It did receive nominations in different categories, but never won an Oscar which was a major disappointment.
