FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. The agency constituted on August 2011 under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. This is completely an autonomous body running of its own under a non-executive Chairman, not below the rank of Secretary.
The purpose of creating this agency in India is to ensure the public health by implementing Food Safety. The complete working process and activities of FSSAI is as per the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006.
The main work of FSSAI is to regulate the Food marketing, selling, storage, supply, and manufacturing. The Supplier, Manufacturers, Retailers and Stockiest of Food Items are needed to get FSSAI License from the regional FSSAI authorities. FSSAI authorities are issuing Certificate on the basis of laboratory testing of the food products of the concerned applied.
FSSAI authorities can file the criminal case against any person who involves in adulteration, selling of expired and sub-standard food to the public. There is the provision of strict legal action under the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006.
FSSAI under the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006 definitely helps control over adulteration and ensure food safety.
