Who should decide what to watch on TV: the parent or the child?

With the advent of electronic media in the early 1990's, the facet of television industry has changed rapidly. The television industry evolved after growth of cable television industry and multiple channels made their way into our homes.

This created a new challenge for the parents as children got fee access to the increasing number of television channels. Many of these channels had content that was not suitable for the young mind and the free access to channels created a precarious situation.

In such challenging times, it is but natural that we need to draw a boundary and keep a check on what content should be available to children.

Children’s preference

If left to children they would always want to choose what to watch on television. In a young age, the child does not have the wisdom to decide what to watch and what not to watch. It is therefore, the moral responsibility of parents to help children choose the kind of content they should be watching on television.

Parents Guidance

Parents guidance plays a vital role when it comes to choice of programs that young children should be watching. As a parent, you should ensure that you do not get harsh with the child and devoid them of viewing something which could have enhanced their knowledge base.

Behaving in a harsh manner is also not an option since the child will then opt for watching television at a time of their choice when you are not around. The best judicious way of working out a viable solution here is to be friends with the child and motivate them to watch television along with you. This way their instinct of viewing television will be satisfied and they will not jump the line, especially when it comes to viewing some content which they should not be viewing.

Parents’ guidance is always important when it comes to ensuring what kind of content your child is watching on television and you should follow this to ensure that your child gets your worthy guidance. If you raise your children with this wisdom and perception they will definitely become learned viewers and will understand the relevance of watching television in a guided manner.

In the ever increasing demand of technology, the television industry has come over rapid changes. We require TV in our day to day lives to entertain, acknowledge us with latest happenings and for education. For adults, there is no question or a thought of concern as what to watch, when and where to watch, how to use it as they know what is good or bad for them. Parents know well that they are using these gadgets only because it is useful to them in some or the other way.  But when it comes to children, they regularly need parental care and control over them. Other ways, children are not familiar about what is good for them and what bad so giving them this responsibility completely to themselves could be risky. The TV show could range from a thriller to a soft comedy to daily soap drama or an adult show. Who knows what could attract their attention?

A lot of times, children try changing channels to get the best show to watch on. This will include what he/ she should hear and see and also not good to hear and not good to see. Also all children are different by nature and their behavioural patterns are also different. So seeing a terror drama or emotional scene, children might feel saddened and emotional. At this moment parents can handle their children well and teach them how to face such situations. Such things should be shown, but only parental guidance. Some children are bold enough to experiment the stunts without parental guidance and proper precaution. So parents need to restrict their children from watching such scenes.

Age factor also matters in case of viewing TV. Lower age groups hardly understand anything, so it’s useless of giving children freedom to watch what they want to. Grown up children/ teenage can understand better and are at times fit to choose what they can watch what they want to do, but still parents need to keep watch on them too.
