What Relationship Advice should you give to your Daughter?

Every parent knows that the world outside is harsh. And, this is one of the major reasons that parents fear for their children so much. This innate fear that parents experience whenever their child steps out into the world out there is completely justified.

Parents play a major role in shaping up the way their children look at their lives. From paving the way to leading a happy life, to being a role model and sources of inspiration, parents are the most crucial elements in a kid’s life growing up.

Things get a little tricky if you have a daughter. As we all know, the world is a little less harmonious place for girls, and in such times, you have to be the shoulder that your daughter needs. Parents and mothers, in particular, have to impart relationship advice to their daughters. In this article, we’ll make a note of the things that a mother should tell her daughter about relationships and heartbreaks. We’ll also discuss the relationship advice that a father can give to his daughter.

When it comes to mothers, they are perhaps in the best position to understand what their daughters are going through when it comes to relationships. Now, your daughter might be completely happy in her relationship, or she might be utterly heartbroken, you, as a mother, should always make sure that you tell her certain things about relationships that will remain with her forever. Following are a few relationship advice you should give to your daughter.

Things A Mother Should Tell Her Daughter About Relationships

#1. You Don’t Need Anyone

This is perhaps the most crucial relationship advice that you can give to your daughter. Young girls, often have the tendency to completely give into a relationship, until it comes to the point where they are undervalued and underappreciated. It is important for your daughter to know that she doesn’t need anyone in her life to be happy. A person can be absolutely fine when not with anyone and that if your daughter ever feels that the relationship is taking a toll on her, she should choose to part ways. Tell her that she is amazing the way she is, and she doesn’t need anyone’s approval for that.

#2. Give And Take Respect

It is very important to teach your daughter to first give respect and then expect reciprocation. In fact, this advice is not necessarily limited to her romantic relationship, but to all the other social relationships that she’s a part of, including friends and family. Teach her that she can’t get respect until she first gives it to someone who is important to her.

#3. Always Be Yourself

In direct conjunction with the first relationship advice, you have to make your daughter understand the fact that she is the most beautiful person. And, if anyone tells her otherwise, she shouldn’t be hanging out with that person. Women have an innate tendency to give, to do everything possible to keep people around them happy. However, in the tryst to keep everyone else happy, they often forget about themselves; this should never be the case. The life of your daughter is entirely hers, and she deserves it to live it on her own terms. Self-love is one of the most important aspects of any growing individual, and your daughter should always keep her life and interest above others.

#4. Feel Comfortable With Your Body

Relationships come with intimacy, both in physical and emotional terms. When it comes to physical intimacy, your daughter must be in her own skin and feel comfortable with her body. She should remember that her body deserves pleasure. A woman’s body is not an object that is to be pursued; rather, a woman’s body is hers to be enjoyed. A lot of mothers don’t talk about physical intimacy with their daughters, but they should. After all, if you will not teach your daughter the importance of physical intimacy, then who will?

#5. Be In Relationships Only For The Right Reasons

Teenagers have an impressionable mind, and we all know the influence that friends can have on them. When it comes to relationships, there are high chances that your daughter might not even know that she is in a toxic relationship. It is your responsibility, as a mother, to make her understand what a real relationship is all about. Teach them that true love is not just about getting physically intimate, but about affection, care, and respect. Your daughter needs to know the dos and the don'ts of a relationship, and she should also be made aware of the toxic things that might haunt her later. If ever she feels that there is a lack of empathy, affection, care, or respect in her relationship, she should move out of it quickly.

#6. Heartbreaks Teach You Good Things

In your long life, you yourself might have had a few heartbreaks. So, you’re perhaps the best person that can teach your daughter that heartbreaks are blessings in disguise. While a breakup might make one feel completely out of place, life eventually gets better. Teach your daughter that a breakup is not such a bad thing after all, as it means that the person they were seeing was not worth the effort. Sure, she’ll shed a few tears in remembrance of the lost love, but she’ll soon come to terms with reality and will come out of it as a stronger person. Parents would definitely want their daughters never to have a heartbreak, but as we all know, it is quite inevitable. However, with experience, you can teach your daughter that a breakup is silly and that there are a billion people out there to explore.

#7. Fairytales Are Not Reality

Most young girls long of that one handsome young man, who would come across and woo their hearts like no one has ever done before. You, as a mother, need to tell your daughter that she is indeed your princess but that life is not a fairytale. Your daughter needs to understand that fairy tales were written for a very different audience back then and that they don’t have any practical relevance. She can either keep on waiting for her Prince Charming or go out and find a suitable partner for herself, who loves her not because of her beauty, but because of the person she is.

#8. Beauty Doesn’t Last Forever, The Heart Does

Talking of beauty brings us to one of the most important advice that you should give to your daughter. Looking good and wanting to look pretty is absolutely great, but you should tell your daughters that beauty should not be their ultimate desire. The right people often overlook the way a person looks in favor of the way that a person actually is. While your daughter may remain beautiful for a good 30-40 years, age will eventually catch on to her. If she isn’t a good person, then people won’t naturally like her. Also, if your daughter’s partner insists her to look pretty all the time, then he is not worth being with her.

#9. Don’t Chase Love

We all want some love in life. But, the strange fact about love is that it comes only when it has to. Teach your daughter never to pursue love relentlessly, as the feeling of love can never be pursued. Tell her that there is someone for everyone and that she will find love in her life when the right time comes. She might pursue love and find it, but those stories generally don’t last long; as they say, what you chase, runs away. Moreover, if your daughter runs behind a person who doesn’t acknowledge her presence, it can seriously mar her dignity and self-confidence. So, tell her to live and enjoy her life, and she’ll soon find true love.

We’re sure everyone agrees to the fact that mothers can have conversations with their daughters that fathers might never have. However, that in no way means that fathers don’t have a role in making their daughters understand their worth in relationships. Here is what fathers can advise their daughters.

Things A Father Should Tell His Daughter About Relationships

#1. Some Men Are Not Worth The Time

You're a man, and you know that all men are not good people. With the amount of unkind and thankless guys out there, chances are that your daughter will surely come across one of them at least once in her life. If she does, it becomes your responsibility to tell her that it's fine.

#2. Male Attention Is Not The Key To Happiness

It is absolutely imperative that your daughter understands the importance of 'individuality.' One day, you will likely give your daughter to another man, and as a result, the society believes that girls always need a man in their life. We wish people knew that not even half of it is true. You, as a father, should make your daughter understand that there are far better things to do in life than crave for male attention.

#3. Relationships Are About Acceptance

Cite the example of your relationship with your wife and how you have fights, but eventually, how you guys happily resolve. Teach your daughters that relationships involve two different personalities and it is extremely important for the involved parties to understand and accept the other person with all their flaws.

So, there you have it. These were a few relationship advice that you can give to your growing daughter that can help her a lot in her life. If you would like to add more to this list, let us know in the comments below. We would love to hear from you.
