WhatsApp planning to launch UPI-based payment

WhatsApp which is now owned by Facebook is planning to enter the mobile payment segment. The plan is to introduce peer to peer payment system and it will be based on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform.

When and if launched, this platform will be the first from social network leader. A report published in The Ken website said that this person to person payment system is being designed and will be launched in India in the next six months.

Interestingly, the website has also said that WhatsApp is also looking for people with a technical background who can work on this project. In February, the co-founder of WhatsApp Brian Acton had said that they might enter into digital payment segment also.

Digital payments in India had received a boost after the demonetization done by Narendra Modi in November last year. Increasing number of people are opting for digital payments and this move by WhatsApp can be seen as a step in the direction of using the presence scenario in India to boost its digital payment platform.

WhatsApp is a popular social networking platform and if such a system in promoted in India, it will surely turn out to be a popular preposition both for WhatsApp and its users.
