Cinema, like any other media, leaves an indelible imprint on one’s psyche. Even the minutest of details can unknowingly have an influence over the audience.

Film direction, being a fundamental part, can either make a movie immortal or drag it into obscurity. Direction is a domain that had been taken over by men since the advent of cinema. However, in the present times, we interestingly find women taking over the film direction as efficaciously as men. Here is a list of some of the best films directed by women:-

#1.  Wonder Woman (2017)- Directed by Patty Jenkins, the film Wonder Woman is based on a DC Comics character. Being a woman directed movie, with a superheroine as the central character is what makes it all the more interesting. Within the fortnight of release, the film had already received a widely positive response and started grabbing accolades. The film has also entered into the list of one of the biggest opening successes for a female directed film.

Fed Up (2014) - A documentary, directed by Stephanie Soechtig, focuses on the alarming issue of obesity, diabetes, and other health-related problems in the United States due to the escalating level of sugar intake. First premiered in the U.S. Documentary Competition Program, the film received a positive critical response in Hollywood Reporter, LA Weekly, and Indiewire.

#3. The Kids Are Alright (2010) - Directed by Lisa Cholodenko, The Kids Are Alright is a comedy-drama revolving around the lives of a lesbian couple, Nic and Jules, and their children. The movie delves deep into the concept of identity and family. The critics widely accepted the film, and even won the Golden Globe Awards for the Best Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy.

#4. Bend It Like Beckham (2002) - Made under the direction of Gurinder Chadha, the film is largely based upon the conflict between an eighteen-year-old Sikh girl and her family. Being a football and woman-centric film, it received a positive nod from the critics for maintaining a balance between humor and social representation. The film had bagged numerous awards, including the ESPY awards for the best sports movie and GLADD Media Awards in the category of Outstanding Film- Wide Release.

#5. Bridget Jone’s Diary (2001) - Based on Helen Fielding’s novel of similar title, and directed by Sharon Maguire, Bridget Jone’s Diaries is a romantic- comedy. It is a reinterpretation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The film was both a critical and commercial hit. It was even nominated for the BAFTA Awards for the Best British Films, Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy, to name a few.

#6. Sleepless in Seattle (1993) - One of the most popular movies in the category of romantic comedy, Sleepless in Seattle is an incredible tale of getting a second chance at love and family. Directed by Nora Ephron, the film was a success internationally and got critically acclaimed. It won the 51st Golden Globes Award in the category of Best Film- Musical or Comedy.
