Railway Bridge On Chenab River To Be Taller Than Eiffel Tower

The world's tallest railway bridge is nearly set to tower 359 meters above the Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir. It will also be 30 meters above the symbolic Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The bridge will be completed in around two years from now i.e. June 2019. It will be developed to centrally link Katra & Banihal which are being a part of the Baramulla-Srinagar-Udhampur railway link. And more than 66 percent of the construction has been completed till now.

Being an engineering marvel, this bridge is being designed and constructed at a total cost of Rs. 1, 250 crores. The bridge can easily withstand winds of up to 260 km/h and is equipped to combat explosions. Its lifespan is said to be approximately 120 years.

The Konkan Railway Chief Engineer R K Singh asserted to PTI that more than 300 engineers and 1300+ workers are employed to make the construction of this bridge a huge success by 2019.

Once completed, this bridge on the Chenab River would be the world's tallest and will also surpass the record of China’s 275 meters Shuibai structure over the Beipan River.

A crane has been purchased from Italy at the cost of Rs. 20 crores for carrying the materials to the construction area. A majority of the tracks would remain under tunnels as the construction process is quite treacherous from Katra to Banihal.

All kinds of model studies, slope stabilization technologies, and several departmental supervisions are being rendered by the US and the UK-based professionals.

All the modern, as well as traditional safety and security measures, are being incorporated for ensuring that no loss or damage happens in the future when the bridge is open to the public. This bridge is also expected to improve the accessibility features for the Indian Military Forces along with contributing towards the economic development of the state.
