What does Low-Key mean?

A low key person quite simply put is someone who is very restrained and modest. They do not go out of their way to get attention and are not very forceful with their emotions.

The Webster dictionary describes 'low key' as quiet and relaxed. A person who is low key would like to keep things mellow and avoid getting attention. They keep things understated and are very laid back contrary to those who are hyper, loud and unafraid to be in the spotlight.

To keep things on the low key means to keep them subtle and mellow. For example, a low key gathering means a small group of people and keeping things quiet. It is always done on a tiny scale. So, instead of making a big announcement and throwing a grand party, just calling a selected few people and having a regular night out is what it’s about.

An individual who is low key is very placid and is not overly fond of the crowd or maddening frenzy. This word which is the new age to term to describe a subtle person or an event has managed to become a part of our vocabulary.
