While one form of Bae is trending over the internet, according to Visual Thesaurus's Neal Whitman, there are other examples of the word Bae that have existed on the web for long. He claims that the word was derived from 'baby' or 'babe.'

Simply put if you are tired of calling your lover 'babe' or 'baby,' then 'bae' is a new age word to show affection to your better half and make a good Instagram hash tag.

Funnily enough, the word 'Bae' has several other meanings apart from the popular and most well-known ones. In the 1500s, this word was used to refer to a sheep sound and in Danish, the meaning of the word base means ’poop’. The Icelandic meaning of the word means bye, not really a term of endearment if you think about it.
