While the term has already become a trend these days, many people are still unaware of what it exactly means. OFC , the rappers aren’t talking about the tool that a plumber uses. The origin of the word ‘ratchet’ can be traced to the Cedar Grove neighborhood in Shreveport, Lousiana to almost two decades ago. The term first made an appearance in a published song in 1999, when Anthony Mandigo released the ‘Do the Ratchet’ where it was a derogatory term to describe someone as trashy, jealous, having little or no morals or someone claiming to be something they are not. Ever since the term has been used to describe Shreveport’s ghetto way of life.

However, as the word traveled to other parts of the United States with several rappers like Lil Wayne, Juicy J, and T.I. adopting it, the meaning of the word was further explored and remained no longer in the hands of Louisiana rappers. It is often used today to describe a woman who believes she is the eye candy for every man, while in reality, she isn’t. This is when the meaning of the term took a turn and brought in some positive connotations. Williams, a producer, explains that being ratchet does not necessarily translates to something negative, but could also mean being real, cool, sloppy or flashy. Perhaps that’s the meaning of ratchet that Lady Gaga explored in her single of the same name with Azealia Banks.
