Among the five prominent cities which had the worst air pollution in the country between 2015 and 2016, Delhi and Faridabad have figured prominently. Rajya Sabha has been informed about this today through a notification.
Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave said in a written reply that cities which were ranked as the worst polluted between November 2015 and October 2016 include Delhi, Faridabad, Varanasi, Jaipur, and Lucknow. This reply was given by the minister in response to a specific question which originated in this regard.
These two cities Delhi and Faridabad did not fare better on National Air Quality Index and were found to have poor air quality. However, the scenario is not bad for many other cities including Ahmadabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru which have fared better in terms of Air Quality in the country.
The dismal scenario on air quality in Delhi and Faridabad is a big question mark on the capability of Government functionaries who claim to have taken firm steps to curb the pollution. Measures like even-odd were taken by Delhi Government in which vehicles plied on the basis of their number plates on alternate days. However, these efforts seem to have not played a major role in curbing air pollution as indicated by the data presented in the Rajya Sabha.
