How To Get A Job At Google?

Google is one of the most desirable companies to work for. However, sometimes it feels that Google’s real mission is not to help us find things or make money but to create a master-race of employees. We all know, what working for Google is going to feel like. There are free haircuts, free meals, free beer and wine on Fridays; who wouldn't want to work for them?

Want in? Well, let us tell you the stringency of Google’s interviews is legendary. It is definitely not going to be easy to land a job at Google. However, you might be someone Google is looking for. Someone, with the zeal to experiment and learn.

If working for Google is the ultimate dream of your life, then here is a list of things that you need to check before you think of applying. Take a look:

Have The Right Aptitude

It is one of the most prestigious companies on the planet to work for. Working for Google is a dream that not many can even aspire for. However, what sets apart someone who has been hired by the tech giants to someone who didn’t make the cut is perhaps the aptitude. Be prepared for really tough questions that will seem very easy if you have the right aptitude. Take for example the following question. "What number comes next in this sequence: 10, 9, 60, 90, 70, 66…?" Now, you either know the answer to this or not. If you have a knack for solving similar questions, then you might end up getting a job at Google.

Be Proactive Through Interviews

To make things a little clear, Google is not like your current company where perhaps just one interview is enough to decide. At Google, they believe that everyone has to go through 5 rigorous interviews as it enables them to churn out the cream de la crème of the applicants. They believe in the “wisdom of crowds, ” and hence they want multiple opinions from a candidate. So if you have it in you to sit through 5 exuberant interview rounds, then you’re not far away from landing your dream job.

Don’t Flaunt Your IQ

An interviewer for Google said if you have an IQ of more than 130, then perhaps you’re not someone Google is looking for. You may be wondering why someone with such high IQ doesn’t make the cut. The simple explanation to this is that Google sees people with high IQ as saturated and who take credit for every good thing while they push the blame for mishappenings on others. Also, the fact that you remember your IQ because it is extremely high is considered to be a sign of having a huge ego. So, it’s fine if you don’t have a high IQ, however, if you do, make sure not to flaunt it.

Don’t Boast Of A Successful Track Record

It goes the same for this as with having a higher IQ because Google believes that an “expert” will look at any problem and feel that he’s seen it 100 times before. He is very likely to come up with a solution as well. However, that is not really what Google wants. They want someone who is willing to take risks and find creative solutions to problems. Solutions that are not generic but in fact give out an entirely new definition to a problem. They will encourage you on all the times you’ll fail, but they will wait for that one moment of brilliance you come up with. That is what they love. So, it’s fine if you’re not an expert. You’ll become one once you join Google.

Know Yourself Completely

Do you feel you know who you are and how your thought process works in general? Take for example a simple question that is often asked at Google’s interviews. Why did you choose the last 5 articles that you read? Well, if you don’t know then that means problems. Google’s first criterion for intelligence is called "learning ability," which is defined as being able "to process on the fly … to pull together disparate bits of information." It doesn't bode well for Google's "structured behavioral interviews" if you go to pieces when a simple question like this is fired at your face.

To Work For Google, You Have To Love Google

One has to love the company that they're interviewing for. Be passionate in what he/she is interested in. You may say that would only score brownie points - somewhat true. But it's that energy that an interviewer might notice that makes the difference. At the end of the day, it comes down to this: Can you communicate how you can help the company? Passion, creativity, initiative, and a 'getting things done' attitude are all signals of that.

Lower GPA Doesn’t Matter (Somewhat)

Believing that Google will not value what you’ve scored in college is an absolute myth. Yes, it is not their priority but having a better GPA is always going to help your cause. But don’t worry if you didn’t manage to get a higher score in college because that doesn’t spell the end of the road for you. Google will still appreciate if you’re a great engineer and an absolute pro at problem-solving. Just show how passionate you’re for codes and technology and in how many ways you can be a valuable asset to the company.

Don’t Apply Through The Company’s Website

Yes, this is a mistake that many people make. Individuals who work at Google will always suggest you that a direct entry into Google is one of the toughest jobs in the world. Rather, you can choose to go through an internship at Google before thinking of getting a job there. Let’s be realistic here; Google is a big company, and it receives an upwards of 5,000 applications every day through its website. It is humanly impossible to go through each one of them. However, if you’re already an intern there, chances are you know some people who can get you an interview. Trust us, getting an interview at Google is tougher than clearing it.

Here Is Who Google Doesn’t Want

And in the end, there is always a ‘kind’ of person that any company wants. Google for that matter is very clear about who it wants: extremely bright extroverts. The company is founded on intensive collaboration. This is reflected even in the office layout, with only a handful of private offices. The stereotypical engineer—someone who works best alone and hates distractions—is probably not a good fit.
