Women in today’s society have to prove their worth. However, you would be surprised to know that in early Vedic Era, the women enjoyed a respectable position. However, during the late Vedic era, a downfall was witnessed in their position.
The participation of women was required during many rituals during the early Vedic period. Even, the concept of sati was only symbolic in the early Vedic era. Widow Remarriage was allowed though generally, she had to marry the brother of her late husband.

During the Gupta period also women did participate in administrative jobs. The daughter of Chandra Gupta II, Prabhabati did administrative duties in the kingdom of her father.
Amarkosh, a relic found from the Gupta Era has mention of women performing the duties of teachers and professors. This in itself highlights the proactive role women played in Vedic Era.
Instances of freedom of expression to women are amply visible if one studies the progress of rulers in Deccan. Many royal women of South India excelled in Music and Art during the Vedic Era. The present trend of crime which we see today against women on a large scale was nowhere evident during the Vedic Era.
This is a sarcastic comment on the present state of women and it appears that they occupied a position of respect in Vedic Era which we do not see now anywhere.
