Movies are much more interesting (and mysterious) than what the general audience perceives them as. The entire cast and crew significantly work together to put their best foot forward. At times it's the story that takes over, on the other hand, it can be the direction that wins accolades. But least do we realize that stars also agree to alter their appearances to such extreme levels just for adding that relatable touch to their characters.
Some roles do require a commitment, but going way beyond has been proved by several actors time and again. Modifications to the appearances even made the stars unrecognizable. But they have also been appreciated and awarded for their efforts. Weight is one aspect no actor, especially the women, can play with, but they leave no stone unturned to make the audience believe in their characters. The list is endless, but we talk about seven female actresses who permanently gained or lost their weight just to portray the best of their film characters.

Her exceptional performance in Sophie’s Choice made her lose weight to become extra skinny! Not only did she incredibly drop that weight but also won an Oscar for the role. Do Oscars favor the extra lean or the bulkier ones or is it just the acting! Who knows? She even chopped off all her hair on screen in one of the scenes! She made the film worth watching no matter what the story may make you feel about.

The Diary of Anne Frank made Shelly Winters gain weight to an extreme level. But afterward, she was unable to drop those kilos and often spoke on shows how this decision was a disaster to her figure. What may ever be the story, she won the Oscar!

She starved herself for the role in Les Misérables which later also got her an Oscar! She always felt awkward about talking about her dramatic looks for the movie. She never intended to give out any ideas to the people. Anne didn’t only deprive herself of food but also her husband to engross into the role that required her to be much more deeper, look homeless, seem to enter the darkness and severely temperamental.

She gained a lot of weight for her role in the film Monster. Charlize's diet contained a lot of junk food to make her gain those kilos. She didn’t use makeup at all, shaved her eyebrows and at a certain point became indeed unrecognizable. Though her performance was incredible and she did win an Oscar for the Best Actress category, but do you think it's all worth?

But the Clint Eastwood drama did land her an Oscar for the Best Actress category. Her diet included eating in every hour along with a tremendous amount of protein intake. The profession is quite demanding on a physical level, and such savage transformations are just a part of it!
