When you go to hang out with your friends and order something to eat, you always want something to go with it; a side dish. And, popular opinion or not, the most preferred side dish has always been French fries. Be it with burgers or with pizza; fries have always been a man’s go-to side dish to munch on while having conversations. With the popularity of fries, it is not hard to understand why almost all fast-food retailers have incorporated them into their menu.
However, all things merry about the fries stop just there. It really is nothing apart from being just a tongue appealing snack. Despite being made out of potatoes; which is a primary source of carbohydrates in our body, it is surprising that the fries themselves have no health benefits of their own.

It is understandable that an appealing dish might not always provide health benefits, but what if someone told you that your favorite snack has been killing you from the inside? That you’ll live a lot less if you continue munching on them? Shocked, right?
Well, if recent studies are to be believed, French fries are slowly killing you from inside. A study published in the American Journal of Chemical Nutrition has revealed that eating fries more than twice a week doubles your chances of death. The experiment involved looking at potato consumption in 44,400 adults between the age of 45 and 79 over the course of 8 years. And guess what? By the end of the study, 236 of these people had already died.

But, what makes potato such a deadly killer? Well, experts say that potato is one the humble-most vegetables that humanity has ever known. However, fried potatoes are not as kind on the human body. As much potatoes have a positive influence on people, fried potatoes have an equally negative one if not more. While unfried potatoes are a healthy food as they contain a good amount of fiber, vitamins, and micronutrients, fried potatoes have lots of fats and added salts.
If you’ve thought that added fats and sugars are not as fatal and a lot of food items contain it, consider this: French fries also contain acrylamide. For those of you who don’t know what acrylamide is, the chemical poses a risk of giving birth to several types of cancer in rodents. The International Agency for Research on Cancer considers this particular chemical as a probable human carcinogen; something that can cause cancer in humans.

Now, the link between the consumption of French fries and its association with untimely death and cancer might not be completely proven, but ill effects that French fries and fast food, in particular, can have on us cannot be ignored. The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion recommends 3-5 servings of vegetables per day. It also urges to cut on food items that have an excessive amount of fat and resist fried food in particular. The French fries might be a sumptuous snack to munch on, but sadly it bears too many consequences if consumed on a regular basis.
