Nehru's legacy as the first PM of India

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru has played a pivotal role in the freedom movement of India.

After India attained independence, he became the first prime minister and until his death, played a key role in the making of modern India, surmounting the pain and twinge of partition.

India under his dynamic leadership became a pluralistic society, following the path of socialism and secularism.

The country took myriad steps toward development and innovation in science, technology, industrialization under his stewardship.

His artistic ability of dexterity and recreating a new state from the older version that was marred by orthodoxy, hierarchy and the debris of a putrefying empire was extraordinary.

The civilized and reformist political system of India is based on three principles institutionalized by Nehru - democracy, secularism and pluralism.

He has infused democratic values in the country India. He treasured and consolidated the democratic system by preferring an electoral form of government through free and fair elections and advocating for equality.

His commitment to democracy was replicated by his respect toward the Parliament, leaders of the opposition, independence of the judiciary, and freedom of the press.

He was a quaint statesman, totally conscious of the fact that democracy required the fortitude of tolerance and teamwork, and made Indians believe they are capable of sustaining the spirit of democracy.

Nehru picked secularism as he was convinced that India belonged to all irrespective of caste, creed and religion.

The test in his days was to institute the integrity of the past of India leading to the vivacity her present which was a spectacle of a pluralist society shaped by divergence and nonexistence of uniformity.

His commitment to eliminate the economic discrimination of the colonial era has been manifested by the assortment of development work across the country during his era - Durgapur Steel Plant, Bhakra Nangal Dam, Green Revolution In Punjab, to name a few.
