How can one describe Fidel Castro? Words often seem to fail when you try to describe this great leader. What made him one of the greatest human beings ever to have walked the planet? It is not because of the fact that Fidel ruled Cuba for 49 years and the mantle of a communist party leader also does not make him a true legend. He possessed many other qualities like all great men and his contributions are truly immortal.
The making of a legend
Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926 in Biran, eastern part of Cuba. His sense of anger towards injustice and urge to speak and act against all types of injustices began during his childhood itself. His father was a Spanish immigrant and a farmer and, he possessed many large land holdings. There was no need for young Fidel to work hard and earn a living. This man was different and he was deeply influenced by the poverty of the peasants around him. His association with the Havana University as a student played a very significant role in enhancing the revolutionary potential in him.
Fidel put an end to dictatorship in Cuba
Since 1898 to 1959, Cuba was a colony and the imperial masters decided every aspect pertaining to the lives of the Cuban people. Fidel’s first revolt to take the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba in 1953 was a failed attempt and he was sentenced to fifteen years in prison. Two years later, he got released and was asked to go into exile in Mexico. This determined revolutionary was not willing to give up and he came back to Cuba after 2 years with his rebel group and dethroned General Batista forever.
Fidel is an inspiration for millions and millions of people all around the world. He was the principal leader of the Cuban revolution and his determination, vision and commitment helped him overthrow the dictatorship of General Fulgencio Batista. Immediately, Fidel was declared as the prime minister of Cuba and, he motivated and inspired the Cuban people including peasants, students and workers to fight against US imperialism with great determination and courage. In 2008, he resigned from the presidency due to ill health and his brother Raul Castro became the President of Cuba.
This great man survived many assassination and demonetization attempts by the CIA and he clearly demonstrated to the world that it is possible to stand up against imperialistic forces if you have determination and courage. His legacy as a revolutionary and a great human being cannot be described in a few words. What makes an individual a great leader? A great leader is the one who is capable of addressing the great social needs of his time. Fidel possessed this quality in abundance and it can be said without an iota of doubt that Fidel Castro is true legend in every sense of the word.
