What does MHM mean?

Are you fond of interacting with your near and dear ones using text messages? Do you find yourself texting a lot? Are you absolutely hooked to using the texting language?

In today’s day and age we all so conveniently get in touch with anyone around the world just by sending them a small text message. We can have long, really long conversations with people who are not present physically with us. We can send some urgent information to people at any given point of time. All of this has sort of established a culture where we are all so comfortable with the regular usage of the texting language. The immediate response in the form of an abbreviation or a sigh now comes naturally to us. One such thing which is very common in texting language is the expression of feelings through a sound. We have started talking exactly the way we would talk if the person were physically present in front of us. One such use of sound is ‘mhm.'

This sound is generally associated with yes. Each person who uses English for communication is well aware of the fact that sometimes we end up using the sound ‘mhm’ or ‘mmmm’ to say yes or as a gesture of agreeing to something. ‘mhm’ usually is a combination of an mmm sound which is followed by an hmm sound.

#1. It can be used mostly when the answer to a question is either a yes or a no. When the question is close-ended, and you can only express your opinion through a yes or a no.

#2. You can use it when you wish to tell someone that you completely understand what they are trying to tell you. It is at times used to convey the fact that the other person has made themselves absolutely clear to you.

#3. It is most often used to when you wish to convey that you agree to something. When you are with your friends, and you all are having a discussion, during which you wish to agree to some idea they propose, but you want to do it in a very subtle way, you can use ‘mhm.’
