What is democratic parenting?

Parents always wish to adopt suitable parenting style to keep their children well-disciplined.  In a democratic parenting, the parent can set clear rules and expectations for their children. They tend to discuss their matters openly with children and like to follow the give-and-take policy. With passage of time, the children understand their responsibilities and lead their life independently. As quoted by Alfred Adler, "Democratic parenting allows a fairness and respect to develop between child and parent."

Democratic parents usually encourage their children to participate in different activities and try to boost their morale. The parenting style infuses a large percentage of happiness and positivism in the household. Democratic parenting enhances the aspects of obedience, discipline, motivation, positive and love in children. Communication is another key attribute of the democratic parenting style. So, before the parent set their house rules they need to have a clear conversation with the children and explain them why they should obey such disciplinary habits. Moreover, the children are allowed to take their decisions independently.

Democratic parenting allows the child to become well aware of the decision-making process. The parents always need to remain diligent to their children and resolve their queries in a simplified manner. The parents can also punish the children for any wrongful acts, however the punishment is not that harsh.

With democratic parenting no one is really in charge. Each member of the family is free to do as they wish. With this type of parenting there is usually a great deal of love and affection, however, because of the lack of rules children may not learn how to abide by them as they grow older, and it can lead to problems with authority figures in the work place as they become adults.
